Scottish Winter Swimming Championships 2020

On Saturday 7th March 300 swimmers gathered for the second Scottish Winter Swimming Championships at Taymouth Marina, Loch Tay. This year the championships were a truly international affair with competitors from Belgium, France, Denmark, Germany, Latvia and Finland, as well as many swimmers from all over Scotland and the UK. The water temperature on the day 4.2 degrees C and competitors ranged from 20  to 80 years old. Races included 50m breaststroke, freestyle and butterfly, as well as longer freestyle races, up to 450m.

The IWSA and the SwimWild team are incredibly pleased with how the day went. Despite the drizzle, the marina remained sheltered and calm for all races. The hardy swimmers swam brilliantly and danced in their dryrobes to stay warm! There were some fabulous fancy dress outfits for the relay swims and some excellent hats in the head-up breaststroke races - time to get planning yours for next year!!

I would like to say a HUGE thank you to all the safety and medical crew, volunteers, swimmers and spectators for making it such a fantastic event! It has taken a lot of hard work to put an event like this but seeing so many smiling faces, so much laughter and dancing has made it all 1000% worth it.

SwimWild is already in talks with the International Winter Swimming Association about a date for next year. Please check the SwimWild social media pages and website for news of future events.

Did you spot photos of Alice with her sledgehammer, breaking the ice to go for a swim in Loch Insh, on the front of The Times, or in many other national newspapers recently? Or maybe you caught a glimpse of her taking BBC Countryfile’s presenter Ellie Harrison for a dip in Loch Voil on their Winter Special programme

Alice is very proud to be an ambassador for winter swimming and hopes to continue to provide opportunities for people to enjoy the water safely, even in very cold temperatures.
