Oh, 2020! What a crazy coronacoaster of a year you have been! With so many changes of plan and setbacks across the season, I decided that I needed to finish the year with a fun swimming challenge - dipping every day in December!
‘Oooo, can I join you?’ Said my good friend and swim buddy Fiona, ‘but it might have to be more of a dunkathon!’
‘Absolutely! A December Dunkathon it is then!'
December got off to a chilly start with a water temperature of 3.8 degrees C in Loch Insh for our first dip of the month.
Next a wonderfully refreshing swim at Feshiebridge. We had lots of fun attempting to swim against the river flow, before giving up and floating merrily back downstream.
On the 3rd of December, we woke up to SNOW!! Lots of snow! I decided to take the dog for a walk and have a snowy dip in the River Spey rather than trying to dig my car out. It was a perfect morning and I had a sublime swim in the chilly river.
On the 4th we woke to more heavy snow and a difficult drive to our early morning swim in blizzard-like conditions. Fiona called to say that there was a car stuck in the middle of the road in Kincraig. Thankfully it wasn’t long before the road was cleared and Fiona arrived with lots of cake!
We dipped in Loch Insh in the dark, the heavy snow falling all around us - a totally magical experience! Once warm and dry again we ate chocolate cake and flapjacks for breakfast, all before sunrise! A perfect start to the day!
On 5th December I swam at the beautiful Uath Lochans, Glen Feshie. There was a layer of icy snow covering the surface of the lochan and I had great fun making little channels through the slush.
Sunday morning brought our coldest swim yet, with a water temperature of 1.9 degrees C! I think I definitely deserved my chocolate orange cake after that!
We finished the first week of December with a bit of adventure! A swim at the lively Linn Falls, Linn of Ruthrie, Aberlour. Plenty of carrot cake and Millionaire's shortbread was consumed post-swim.
So that is week 1 of our December complete!
7 days of December dipping and what a week it has been! Snow and ice, water temperatures down to 1.9 degrees C and air temperatures as low as -4.3 degrees C!
Thank you to Fiona for being my main swim buddy and Phil for being temperature monitor.
To be continued...
